  5.     Thank you for your interest in Chess Openings  - Ruy Lopez.  Chess Openings  - Ruy Lopez is a text file of 60 chess opening lines of the Ruy Lopez chess opening.  It is cross-referenced to Modern Chess Openings  (MCO-13), completely revised by Nick De Firmian, Chess Grandmaster and former United States Champion.  MCO-13 is published by David McKay Company, Inc. and is available in most fine book stores for $18.95.  It is a must for any serious chess player, beginner and seasoned pawn pusher alike.

  7.     This file is freeware.  You may copy it and distribute it as long as you include this documentation.  If you like it, you can order a full set of Chess Openings with over 1800 lines and more than 50,000 opening moves on disk for $14.95 if ordered by August 1, 1993 .  On August 1st, the price goes to $19.95.  (Availability September 1, 1993.)

  11.     The main purpose of this file is that it can be used with the Freeware Chess Program - GNU CHESS, available from America Online and BBS and is copyrighted by the Free Software Foundation, Inc.

  17. This file contains 60 opening lines of the Ruy Lopez opening averaging almost 15 moves deep.  This file can be used two ways with GNU Chess.

  19.      •  Chess Trainer - Ruy Lopez Opening

  21. Rename the “GNUCHESS.book” file.  I suggest “GNUCHESS.book Original”.  Rename the “Ruy Lopez” file to “GNUCHESS.book” and place in your “GNU Chess for the MAC” folder.  Your GNU chess program will now has as its book 60 Ruy Lopez lines ( and no other lines by the way).

  23.     •  Increase GNU”S BOOK - Add 60 Ruy Lopez lines (almost 1,500 moves) to your GNUCHESS.book

  25. Duplicate your copy of the original “GNUCHESS.book”.  Working with the copy, open your “GNUCHESS.book copy” with a word processing application.  (I have only performed this with MacWrite II.)

Go to the end of the file.  At the end of the file, do insert (or import) file command.  Select ALL (option A) and change font to courier “10”.  Perform “Save file as” text (no line breaks).  Remove or rename your original GNUCHESS.book file from the “GNU CHESS for the MAC” folder.  Rename your working copy (make sure you keep the original!) to GNUCHESS.book.  You have now increased your file by 60 lines or almost 1,500  moves.  Be sure to increase the GNUCHESS memory by using the “Get Info” command by 10K.  I have only tested this under system 7 on a MAC IIsi, please report any problems.
